Wild Salmon Rivers established the annual Sergey Lamzov scholarship and prizes to honor the memory of Kamchatkan fish and wildlife warden Sergey Lamzov with whom WSR and the Wild Salmon Center had worked for many years on steelhead conservation projects. Officer Lamzov was killed in the line of duty on an anti-poaching operation in 2004. Annually WSR awards an $8000 college scholarship to a Kamchatkan student pursuing a degree in biology, ichthyology or conservation biology. Additionally, WSR awards four $500 prizes to top performing Kamchatka high school students. One of the prizes is reserved for a graduate from Officer Lamzov’s home town, Ust-Khairosovo and another is reserved for a native peoples person. The awards committee consists of representatives from WSR, Moscow State University, The Kamchatka Governor’s office, Koryakski Regional Education Board, Kamchatsky Regional Education Board, Kamchatka School District and the Association of Native Peoples. Zarina K. Tairova, graduate of school #4 of Kluchi town of Ust-Kamchatsky district who will attend the University of Petropavlovsk in the Biology Department (ecology, rational & complex use of natural resources). |
