The Central Role of Angling

Anglers play a central role in the collection of data used in the Kamchatka Rainbow Trout Project as well as providing a proof of concept model for the eco-tourism component of the United Nations Development Program's Kamchatka Salmonid Biodiversity Project.

The WSR angling for science program contributes to salmonid preservation in important ways:

  • Most importantly WSR anglers use their fly fishing skills collect important scientific data used to monitor the status of salmonid ecosystems throughout Kamchatka over time.
  • WSR regularly donates helicopter time and boats to Russian fish wardens at a time when local governments are unable to fund adequate anti-poaching efforts on their own.
  • The presence of WSR anglers on the rivers of Kamchatka provides a significant deterrent to the illegal, but very lucrative, local caviar industry.
  • At a time of increasing pressure to develop resource-extraction industries such as mining and forestry that often destroy habitat, WSR fosters the development of locally owned and operated outfitting and tourism businesses, building a local constituency with a vested interest in the preservation of Kamchatka's pristine wilderness and untarnished fisheries.
